Frixion Pens
When Heather asked me to think of my favorite sewing tool to talk about, I knew immediately what to pick because I have been experimenting with these pens every chance I get.
First of all, I’m talking about the Frixion pens made by Pilot. These
are NOT a sewing tool that you’ll find at your usual sewing and craft store. After one of my online sewing buddies told me about them, I ran out to Staples and got my first package of three. I loved them so much that when I saw them on sale at Target for 3/$5 I got another package in different colors.

These amazing pens use erasable ink that disappears with heat. The heat from a warm iron is enough, or even the heat from your dryer! I’ve been scribbling all over everything marking pleats, stitching lines, cutting lines, whatever you can think of, and none of it has stayed. Once I even traced a pattern right onto some white fabric and when I went to press my seams, all the ink evaporated. I love this product. And FYI no one at Pilot is paying me to say a thing. 
So here’s the project I whipped up today using my favorite Frixion pens… a bigger version of my Toddler Nap and Play Mat, which is one of the free patterns you’ll receive for signing up for the Sew Can She Newsletter.
The original pattern uses a single yard of 45″ wide fabric and makes a cute little mat, but I thought it would be fun to make a bigger one. Scroll down to the bottom of this post for the measurements needed to make this bigger mat. Meanwhile, I’m going to show you the Frixion magic…
For step 2 of the instructions, when you are supposed to use chalk to mark your stitching lines, I wrote all over the fabric using my Frixion pen.
I wasn’t even all that careful about messing up. I knew it would all disappear.
See, I thought the puffy pillows might be hard to iron, so I threw it in the dryer for 10 minutes. No ink!
Technical information: The pattern is available here when you sign up for the Sew Can She Newsletter. If you want to try to make this larger mat, instead of using 1 yard of 44″ wide fabric, use 1 1/4 yds of 50″ wide fabric. You will make one extra row of little pillows in step 2, and divide each row into 4 pillows instead of 3. I also used ribbon ties here instead of velcro. The ribbon looks cute, but I think the velcro is easier for little hands.
