Sometimes, sewing can seem like a one person sport but I’m pretty determined to change that. There is just no reason why we can’t sew with friends. That’s why I’m so excited to be part of the Friendship Quilt Along with Amanda Herring. Today is quilt along kick off day and first up is the Fun Block.
Before I dive right into the details, I wanted to share some backstory. I’ve always admired Amanda’s work. Her creative spirit rings through in her designs and I just adore the touch of whimsy that shines bright in her work. Even though I’ve secretly followed her creative journey, it was not until last fall market that I actually had the chance to meet her. She is such a delight! But don’t just take my word for it, here is a quick video of Amanda sharing more about the quilt pattern, Friendship Quilt.
Friendship Quilt Along Details:
All summer long, friends from around the industry will be joining the fun and sharing their take on each block. The creative inspiration and different techniques should provide visual eye candy for all to enjoy.

Fun Block Details
After cutting out my appliqué pieces it was time to get to work.
Now, you know I never like to miss out on an opportunity for some free motion thread drawing and this quilt pattern is perfect!
I backed the center of the flower with the wool for additional dimension. I’m pretty smitten with the way the two blocks turned out and look forward to seeing this quilt top come together.
Now, be sure to see what fun things my friends stitched up on their blocks. You can see the full line up here.

Hello Heather! I love sewing but have never really considered quilting until recently. After finding your blog and having fun reading all about your sewing adventures, I’m ready to dive in! Do you think this QAL would be doable for a beginner? I certainly know how to sew, but am not really familiar with quilting techniques like appliqué. Thanks for any advice you can give!

Hello Kate,
Thanks for the sweet note! I thin this quilt along is perfect for you. The techniques are perfect for every level and can really help you build your skill set. Applique can be made several different ways. I happen to think raw edge, which is highlighted on my block, is one of the easiest. You can use any decorative stitch on your machine or give free motion a try. Fingers crossed you join the fun!

Good morning Heather! I wanted to ask if it is OK for a group of sewists and quilters I bring together once a week to sew the Friendship Quilt in the UK? One problem though we can’t guarantee to sew along and keep up with you. We’d like to make it in our own time and eventually get there!! Sally

Hi Heather, I’m pleased you’re enjoying warm sunshine. It was 9* yesterday and 11* this morning with that lovely wind chill factor to help it along. I’m still wrapped up in my dressing gown trying to read all my emails before I freeze. It will be great when we can live in a climate of our choice. Jenny

Hello Jenny,
Cold weather is not my friend. I love the way it looks as long as I can stay indoors, in front of a warm fire. Stay warm!!

I have been looking at this post along with your last post on here and instagram. I WANT/NEED to try this type of appliqué. Do you have any tips or tutorials on how to do this?
