It’s that time of year when we gather with friends and family for backyard BBQ’s, firefly catching and light shows of colorful fireworks high up in the sky on July 4th. To help celebrate the special day, I created a scrap friendly quilt block called the Land I Love.
As I looked through my fabric stash for supplies, I quickly became excited to find just the right pieces for this block. You see, I really wanted to make sure the block was cheery, fun and give a reason to celebrate. Even the white background has mini stars on it… Just perfect!
Now, to keep things simple, I made the stripes in all the same prints but they can easily be switched out for additional prints in your stash. The sky is the limit with patchwork blocks like this. In my opinion, patchwork blocks are perfect for stitching up your fabric scraps.
Land I Love Flag Block
The finished flag quilt block is available in two different sizes that measure:
- 6″ x 6″ (15.2 x 15.2 cm)
- 12″ x 12″ (33 x 33 cm)
Material & Tool Supply List:
- Assorted Scraps: Red, White & Blue Prints
- Cutting mat/ Rotary cutter/ Quilt ruler
- Heat erasing marking tool
- Spray starch
- Sewing Machine
The simple construction patchwork block highlights flying geese and strip piecing. However, since it has several small pieces I am considering it the perfect skill builder for the confident beginner to intermediate stitcher.
For a limited time, until July 4th, 2019, you can add the Land I Love flag quilt block pattern to your library for free after that, it will be available for sale in the shop.
Love the block but need some project inspiration? Well, you are in luck because I was so inspired while designing this block in EQ8 that I made a few different design layouts.
Land I Love Flag Block Inspiration
These two Land I Love flag block designs came together in a flash! I added a simple star block to the mix and kept my color pallet very patriotic. I really think the simplicity of the patterns helps keep the focus on the Land I Love flag block.
The table runner inspiration uses 2 flag quilt blocks in the 12″ finished size, 6 simple stars finishing at 6″ and 1 1/2″ finished borders. It finishes 45″ long by 15″ wide.
The Land I Love Flag quilt inspiration design uses 10 of the Land I Love flag quilt blocks in the 12″ finished size, 10 simple stars finishing at 12″, 1 1/2″ finished sashing and 3″ finished borders. It finishes 61 1/2″ wide by 75″ wide and looks so amazing that I think I need to start making more blocks!

I just made the Land that I Love block this past weekend. It turned out great! It went together easily and the directions were easy to read.
