Block of the Month Quick as a Fox Series
Welcome to the Block of the Month- Quick as a Fox!!!
I was totally excited when Heather asked me to design a Block of the Month that taught a few different techniques and was for a beginner quilter. This is a great way to get started and begin your quilt addiction…i mean, journey.
quick background about me:
I am Becky. I design patterns– quilts, dolls, and plushies over on http://patchworkposse.com I have been sewing quilts for 15 years and picked up machine quilting 8 years ago. I have a little cottage out back that I sew, design and quilt in. I love trying new techniques and collecting fabric that ‘speaks’ to me. My patterns have been featured as a chef on Moda Bake Shop, Andover Fabrics, Sew Mama Sew, Quilting Gallery and more. I am excited to be here and share my ideas on quilting with you!
Back to the Block of the Month or quilt along {really, the blocks will be weekly, not monthly…but we call them block of the month, not block of the week}
Each block of the month that you sew will represent a different method or technique for sewing quilts. We will focus on the basics of quilt construction making this an easy quilt along. One that you can try out a few new techniques {dipping your toe in so to speak} without a major commitment to a whole monster sized quilt.
The blocks are 12 1/2″ square and there will be 9 of them. Together they make the perfect size of quilt for a baby or a snuggle quilt. Post for the blocks will be weekly- every Tuesday, until the end of March– when we will have a big reveal post {where we show off all of your beautiful quilts}. The Tuesday schedule will keep you busy, but not too much. You will have enough time to finish the block and show it off of course and be ready for the next block. Are you ready to find out what you will be learning and sewing?
Some of the techniques and quilt blocks we will cover are:
-
sewing with a template
-
keeping our seams ¼”
-
paper piecing
-
sewing with points
-
curved piecing
- 3-D quilt block
- making an applique pattern from a coloring page
Some of the blocks that you will sew to practice these techniques are: flying geese, log cabin, dresden plate, hexagons and more. I have also included one block which has been sewn ‘cranky’ style. This is a style that I have come up with to release you from the guilt of perfect sewing! This method allows you to purposefully cutting off points, edges… or whatever else comes along in our way. We will also be making our own applique pattern from a coloring page!
Materials List:
8 fat quarters- this will give you a nice variety to choose from when sewing the blocks. You will need some variety in value…lights, darks and mediums.
Leftovers will be sewn for the scrappy second border
1 yard background- this includes the first border
Backing and Batting need to be- 50″ X 50″
There are so many things you can do with quilting besides sewing one piece of fabric to the other. It is a great way to express yourself. This quilt along is all about you finding something that inspires you- be it the fabric, the colors or the designs draw you in. It is so fun to see what others have come up with using your patterns– but their own inspiration and direction.
To help us all connect and find inspiration from one another, there is a flickr photo gallery group- Share your progress, choices, and finished blocks there. If there is anything I know about quilters and sewists, it’s that we are very visual people. So, please share it so we can all see it. {including your fabric choice!}
I am totally excited to get started and see what progress you have along the way. Feel free to connect with me online- http://facebook.com/patchworkposse for questions, ideas or whatever else you would like to talk about.
Please share the Quick as a Fox Quilt Along with others…..the more the merrier! Plus, the only way to really learn is to meet new sewists, ask questions, share photos and gab. A whole lot. Oh, and don’t forget snacking. Yeah, we like snacking too.

I see a link to all the blocks except block 9, the foxy appliqué. Are there instructions for this or just the picture? Also, how long will the block instructions be available? I love this quilt but am a beginner so am slow to finish blocks.
Thanks,
Patti

Hello Patti,
The links have been updated and all instructions will remain on the blog. You can always come back and reference the pattern and/or instructions.
