Hi everybody! It’s TJ from Studio Mailbox here because it’s time for the monthly meme once again! OK, who recognizes this glass head? Anybody remember? It’s the same one I used to set up the other famous meme about being a card-carrying thread head. Well “famous” might be stretching it but hey, I’m a creative. It’s my job!
When I set up this photo shoot I dug and searched for my box of buttons to no avail. I wanted to fill that skull up with lots of smaller objects to make it look like a human shaped gum ball machine. I was so bummed that I couldn’t find my vast collection that I’ve hoarded over the years. Where is my button box? Anyone? Anyone? I was forced to instead dig through my clothing drawers and pull open all those mini-sized zipped bags of single buttons that come on new clothing tags. So that pretty much gave me about a dozen buttons and a big fist full of ripped open baggies. Oh goodie.
In the end I just made do with what I had, just like we all do when we can’t quite getting something to go exactly how we want it. Do you spy anything interesting in there? Anything intriguing? Anybody got a big bunch of buttons they want to send to old TJ?
Hey, don’t forget… you guys have an open invitation to come hang out with me on my facebook page or blog. Until next month, keep on stitchin!

My mother had a large button stash ,it was in a huge jar. As a child I was facinated watching her put buttons in and taking buttons out when she needed for a project. She move across the country and back and took her button jar with her. She passed away 2 years ago and the the one item I wanted was her button jar, it was nowhere to be found. I hope whoever got it enjoys the buttons but the the buttons will never mean as much tomthem as they would have to me. I guess I’ll have to start my own :0)

I’m so sorry your mom’s buttons were lost. Sometimes folks don’t realize what’s useless to one person is really meaningful to another. I think starting your own collection is a great idea! Thanks for commenting, xx tj

Last weekend while cleaning out my craft closet I discovered how much of a button collection I really have. I have a box of carded buttons that were my grandmothers and had a jar of buttons that was also hers, but it fell and broke in the garage, I thought I saved it in a bag to sort through & pull out the buttons, but I can’t find it so I’m guessing my husband tossed it. I also have a cookie tin full of buttons that I got from my father in law. And as we sorted through stuff I filled a glass candy jar full of buttons that I have bought from garage sales, thrift stores, stores etc. I’m sure there’s more to be found in my stash since I haven’t even touched all the boxes/bags in the garage yet.

Ooh this sounds like you could mount some of the special ones in a memory frame or display them somehow in your sewing room!

Yes, if I had a sewing room, lol. I have a craft closet that all my stuff is stored in & work on the coffee table or kitchen table most of the time. I’ve thought about a shadow box but i have so many items from my grandmother that I can’t decide what to put in & what to leave out. I make steampunk jewelry in addition to sewing and have thought about making a piece for me with some of her buttons and possibly one of her brooches that I have. I also have my other grandpa’s old watches that I’m looking at making a special piece with. I’m looking forward to when the inspiration as to how to put it together comes to me.

lol I’d love to see the glass head filled with buttons – how cute!! What I did spy in your head was a hank of red gingham (bias?) tape and some heavier thread or twine that would be fun to use. Happy sewing.

LJ – good eyes!! You totally spied the first bias tape I ever made, from gingham fabric. What’s even more crazy is that I took a pic of that WIP and made one of my first MEMEs with it:
