A few weeks ago while shopping, I picked up what has quickly become my favorite skirt. Sadly, the store only offered it in dark gray and black. So, I decided to take matters into my own hands and “Knock it off”. And when I shared the photo of the finished skirt on my Facebook wall, I quickly realized you might want to do the same!
This project is for all levels.
Skill Level- 1 1/2 Buttons
- large piece of paper
- pencil
- ruler
- favorite skirt
Basic Instructions:
- Find a large flat surface to lay your paper (or scrap fabric) on.
- Place your skirt flat onto paper. Be sure to spread out all fullness.
- If your skirt is knit like mine, your grain line will be on center. But if you are working with a woven fabric, you need to be sure you are marking the grain line.
- With your pencil, mark along the outside edge of skirt. I created small dots and then played “connect the dots” with my ruler.
- If you see any funny bumps along the way, just even them out. You would not expect to see a wavy or wonky seam on a store bought skirt. So, fix it- before we get stitching!
- Then add your seam allowance. For my joining seams I added 3/8″. For my hem line I added 3/4″.
- I continued this method for all pieces. The front, back and waistband. Be sure to add the same seam allowance to each joining seam.

I don’t sew well at all, but I was able to do something like this with a favorite summer top. Now I have 5 unique summer tops in amazing cotton prints.

I’m planning to sew a plus size skirt for my sister, and this looks easy enough. I just need to lay my hands on her fave skirt first, though 🙂
