March is all about letting go of the rules and stitching with intuition, curiosity, and a little bit of chaos, in the best way! This month’s technique challenge invites you to explore the freeing world of improv piecing, where there are no patterns to follow, no perfect points to chase, and no wrong turns … just fabric, flow, and fun.

This month, we’re inviting you to dive into your stash, embrace the chaos, and stitch up something that sings with color and personality.
This Month’s Focus: Improv Piecing
What is improv piecing?
Improv piecing encourages you to trust your eye, embrace surprises, and let your creativity lead the way. Improv piecing is your opportunity to choose random pieces of fabric and sew them together, usually without a predetermined plan or pattern.
It’s a fantastic way to:
- Use up those odd-sized scraps
- Experiment with color and texture
- Sew with speed and ease because accuracy is less important.

Grow your Library
Before we dive into project possibilities, let’s explore the growing availability of improv inspiration. Even though there are no rules when it comes to improv quilting, you might find guidelines that take you from start to finish helpful. Check out these titles.

Add a Focal Block
Turning your smaller scraps into commonly used units is the perfect way to create a focal point in a favorite block. Just look at the way the stars and butterfly look in the Sew Hometown Sampler.

Make a Fashion Statement
Improv quilted collars are a great way to display your favorite craft while running errands, lunching with friends, or participating in a sewing meetup. Find the tutorial here. Choose colors that complement the garment or go wild with contrast; either way, it’s a fabulous way to wear your creativity.
