I’ve always admired the look of quilt binding with machine stitching but struggled to perfect the technique. Well now, thanks to the edge joining foot, that’s a thing of the past!
This small piece of metal will elevate your quilting projects with a professionally finished machine binding! I’m excited to share a step-by-step guide on machine binding. In my video, I attach a mock flange detail in the form of a binding, to my Sweet Peep Bunny Pillow Cover.
This extra pop of color creates a polished accent detail without hand stitching. But as an extra bonus, adding binding by machine instead of by hand saves time and when using this method, makes you look like a quilting rock star!
To be fair, I love the look of handstitched binding but the time and patience needed to complete one quilt is just too long for me. I keep thinking about all the other projects I could be working on!
So, machine binding is such a game-changer, offering a clean and crisp edge that rivals hand stitching. With the right tools and techniques, you can achieve a flawless finish that will impress even the most seasoned quilters. And the best part? You don’t need to be an expert to master this method!
Edge Joining Foot Details
Let’s take a closer look at the edge joining foot before seeing it in action.
This center guide bar is designed to keep your fabric in place while passing under your needle. The position markings along the left side will help you keep you aware of your position on your project. The results are flawless spacing, uniform stitches, and pure quilting bliss. As the name suggests, you can also use it to join two pieces of fabric together with one pass of the needle as well as create the perfect narrow edge stitch.
Joining two pieces of fabric together is a breeze. Simply align your fabrics, select a zig-zag, couching, or fagoting stitch, and hit the pedal to start stitching. With each pass of the needle from side to side, you will see your new fabric come to life. You can learn more about the process and watch my how-to video here.
Now the Edge Joining Foot did not come standard with my sewing machine. Instead, it is an add-on accessory that I think is worth the investment. The specialty foot is affordable but ranges in price depending on your sewing machine brand of choice. You can purchase it at your local quilt shop or here online.

This specialized accessory foot ensures accurate stitching along the edge of your quilt project and gives you professional-looking results every time.

As I mentioned, this edge joining foot is not just for binding. I love it so much that I even made this adorable pincushion with it. The best part I’ll show you step by step in a video!
