As a quilter, you might not typically think of a serger as an essential tool in my studio. But let me tell you a little secret: sergers have a special place in my heart. Before I started quilting, I was a garment maker—and not just a hobbyist. I worked as a technical designer for several top brands in the fashion industry. My passion for making garments began early, and I quickly learned an essential truth: if you don’t want to wear loose threads, clean finished seams are non-negotiable. That’s where the serger comes in.
When I purchased my Baby Lock Imagine (a floor model, no less!), it felt like a game-changer. Even now, years later, it’s still one of the best investments I’ve made for my sewing studio. Although I rarely make garments these days, I find plenty of reasons to bring out my serger. Did you know sergers are fantastic for making t-shirt quilts? They not only make quick work of piecing those stretchy fabrics, but they also leave every seam neatly trimmed and clean finished. Talk about a two in one deal!
So, when Sue shared the news about her new book, Pocket Guide to Sergers, I couldn’t wait to take a look. Let me tell you—this little book may be small in size, but it’s jam-packed with useful nuggets!
Video Review
You can see my thoughts about the book in the video below or watch it on YouTube here.
Why This Book is a Must-Have
The Pocket Guide to Sergers covers everything from unboxing your machine to exploring specialty feet, offering practical tips for both beginners and seasoned stitchers. It’s the ultimate serger companion, and I love how compact and handy it is.
One of the standout sections for me is the visual guide to removing stitches. Let’s face it: nobody wants to think about mistakes when sewing, but they’re inevitable. When you’re dealing with a serger, unpicking all those stitches can feel daunting. Sue’s step-by-step pictures make the process so much easier, taking the stress out of grabbing that seam ripper.
The book also walks you through essential maintenance tips to keep your machine running like a dream, troubleshooting advice for common issues, and even ways to maximize the potential of your machine by using specialty attachments. The compact size of the book makes it perfect to tuck into your sewing kit or keep right by your machine for quick reference.
A Note Worth Mentioning
One thing to keep in mind is that this book is small. That said, the font size is a bit smaller than I anticipated but I’m guessing it was necessary to fit in all of the useful information. While the content is fantastic, as someone who wears glasses, I found I needed to slow down a bit to ensure I didn’t miss anything. It’s not a dealbreaker, but if you’re like me, you might want to grab a good pair of readers or ensure you’re working in a well-lit space.
