Did you know March is National Quilting Month and that March 21st is National Quilting Day? Who knew??? Well to celebrate I am going to share a secret……
Well, it’s more like a confession, actually but it sure feels like a dirty little secret.
Quilt Confession
I have never made a traditional quilt from start to finish.
I mean, I’ve stitched tee shirt quilts, commissioned pieces and even quilt tops but never a traditional quilt just for me.
But that’s all about to change. That’s right, I’m determined to turn things around and create something just for me. I’m thinking it will become my go to movie night partner, a couch cozy, my snuggle buddy. You get the idea.
Since this is a total side project for me, its gonna be slow, a real work in progress if you know what I mean. So, today, I’m sharing my inspiration, the basic design and my goal.
Before you laugh, let me explain. This blanket is one of the most loved and valued items in my home. It was made by my late MIL. It’s been told that the ladies would get together at the firehouse while the guys were out on calls and “get social”. Honestly, this totally reminds me of a stitch & bitch which makes me smile even more. I believe this is how she learned to crochet; with friends, one color at a time. It’s pretty safe to say and I think we can all agree that based on the colors it was made sometime in the 70’s with tons of leftover bits of yarn.
The problem is that it “belongs” to my husband and he does not always like to share; not even with Chewie. So, I need to make one just for me. Now, while I LOVE the look of crochet, I just don’t have the mindset to learn a new craft at the moment and I would really like to have this in my hot little hands, like yesterday. That means, fabric is the fiber of choice.
The fabric selection process will be super hard with all the amazing collections on the market today. I’m currently playing around with Sun Print from Alison Glass. The color assortment and prints are slightly more modern and I think when I mix in the black it will look fantastic. But the little inner voice is still nagging at me. Should I do it in a mixture of solids and heathered fabrics to be more in line with the original? Maybe you can help me decide once I get the first mini done.
My plan of attach is to dedicate one or two hours a week to power off all electronics (with the exception of my machine and tunes. This girl has to have her tunes!!) and just work on MY quilt. Perhaps you can help keep me in line. I still need to figure out all the math on the quilt but once that first mini is made, look out- I’ll be rockin’ & rolling till she’s done!
What about you? Do you have any goals you want to share for National Quilting Month? Or maybe you have quilt in the works that you need to help focusing on. If the answer is yes, do you want to sew along with me? Grab your fabrics and post a few photos in the flickr group, or on Instagram. Be sure to tag me @TheSewingLoft so we can cheer each other on and have some accountability.

My next goal is The Birchen Quilt:) I’ve ordered my fabrics, triangles on a roll, & am so excited to get started!! I’ve got a feeling your quilt is going to come out gorgeous!! Can’t wait to see it!!

Thanks Miki, I’m kinda nervous about the quilt which is why I shared it. I figure if I write it down, I’m committed and need to get her done. Fingers crossed she looks good and can stand her own next to the real deal! Keep me posted on your quilt.

I love your fabric choices and will look forward to seeing your progress! I have three quilts planned, drawn, fabric in hand and ready to start, and they all involve circles, which will be a new shape for me: 1. a forest quilt for my son, 2. a tropical paradise quilt for a friend, 3. a fairyland play mat for my grand-niece (this one will come with fairyland finger puppets that I’ll make with the embroidery machine). But first I have to finish the handbag that I’m making this week so I don’t have any UFOs hanging around.

3 quilts- wow, that is a big goal. And they each sound like so much fun! Keep me posted! My first big goal is to get my mini done so that I can get cutting and maybe bring some pieces to stitch together at the retreat next month.

Hi Heather.
What gorgeous fabric you picked out for your quilt! ‘ Love them! I do not think I would mix with the heathers, it’s already going to be Heather’s! haha! So are you going to do a staggered brick setting? or maybe chevrons? Looking forward to following your progress.
Have fun with it! Cheers, Cathy vonJess in MA

lol! I know, right. I really like the fabrics too. I just need to sit down and make it happen. Yes, staggered brick setting is what I’m thinking. I’ll keep you posted.

Hi Heather! What if you made your own Jelly Roll Race? You can set your strips, even FQ strips, in your own colours, 2.5 inch strips. Then would get the same effect with crocheted afghan! Take care, Leslie
Heather says
Thanks for the idea Leslie. I’ll have to look into that and see if it will create the same effect.

Well Heather, I wish you luck making a “ME” quilt. The last three ME quilts I have made now live with someone who just “fell in love” and I can’t say no. LOL.
Heather says
Oh Gosh Cindy, maybe I shouldn’t share my progress. I’m terrible at saying no. Something about those two letters …. they are so powerful. Fingers crossed I can keep this one to myself.

Can’t wait to see what you create for yourself. I have made lots of quilts and only recently completed one that was specific for me. Feels great to have and be able to see.

Thanks for the support! I’m hopeful that by completely a “just for me” quilt, I will be inspired to make one for each girl. I want to tackle a few more keepsake projects this year. Fingers crossed that happens.
