Thread
noun
- a. fine cord of a fibrous material, such as cotton or flax, made from two or more filaments twisted together and used in needlework and the weaving of cloth.
- a piece of such cord.
Thread is commonly used to join pieces of cloth together with a stitch.
For the most part, thread is the unsung hero of all of our sewing projects. It is the key ingredient that keeps everything together or the “glue” that makes everything stick! Without it, our beautiful quilts, runway fashions and home decor would not be possible. Yet so many of us do not take care of our thread. We toss it in a drawer to get tangled together into a big ball of knots.
It is important to understand that thread comes in different weights, colors and fiber properties. Different weight threads will work with different fabrications so, it is best to do a sample stitching test for your project.
Thread Basics-
- Weights: Thread comes in different weights, colors and fibers. Be sure to use what works best with your project.
- Keep it organized: There are different stands and storage options on the market today to keep our spools neat and tangle free. You can find one that fits your space at your local quilt shop or here on line. (I use this box by Art Bin.)
- Where to buy: Grab the perfect color at your local quilt shop or here on line.
