Appliqué –
noun
- a cutout decoration fastened to a larger piece of material
The word applique is French, the past participle form of the verb appliquer (to put on). An applique is a decorative element added to a sewn item, such as:
- quilts
- skirts
- shirt pockets
- banners and signs
- home decor items
There are different sewing techicniques to attach applique designs.
- Clean finished edge
- Raw edge
- Reverse appliqué
Raw edge is extremely popular and most commonly found in sewing today.
Tips & Supplies for Appliqués-
- Cutting: Cutting counts when making raw edge appliqués so, it is important to take your time when cutting out each design.
- Supplies: Paper backed fusible is the perfect way to stabilize your fabric pieces to the main project before sewing in place. While there are different types and brands of fusible on the market today, these are a few of my favorites: EZ Lite Steam II, Soft & Stable, Heat n Bond Lite. All can be purchased at your local shops or online.
- Embroidery Thread: Consider using a heavier weight thread to attach your appliqué pieces. This will add dimension, texture and shine to your project.
