The Barnyard block is up next in the virtual quilt along.
The Barnyard block measures 9″ square when finished and uses up to 5 different fabrics. The simple construction is very similar to the log cabin. To help get you started on the right foot, I’m sharing a few block examples for color inspiration and a few of my favorite tips.
Heartland Heritage Barnyard Block
While these blocks have very neutral background fabrics, I can see them stitched with a dark navy or gray to show a dark night sky.
I selected 4 colorful fabrics from my pile that will pop off the background and really play nice together. Since this is such an easy block to sew, I thought it would be fun to share my secret weapon for bringing block pieces from the cutting table to the sewing machine, design boards.
I like to use design boards. This easy method of transport might seem silly to some but trust me it really helps keep things in order plus, it prevents pieces from falling on the floor and disappearing. With two French Bulldog pups in the house, this is mission-critical in my sewing space. They seem to find everything in the blink of an eye.
Design boards can be purchased in a variety of sizes but for those of you that are crafty with the glue gun, design boards are easy to make. Here is a great tutorial.
Overall the barnyard block consists of a few different units including half-square triangles and rectangles. It has a log cabin style piecing and is easy to make. I love the way my design board helps keep me on task.
