Sending out a special Thank you to littleBits for sponsoring today’s post and inspiring me to Maximize my Creativity!
It’s no doubt that many of us spend too much time thinking, planning and taking pictures of those big events in life that we forget to actually enjoy the moment. So this week, I’m taking a page out of my youngest daughter’s book and am determined to spend more time living in the moment!
I know what you’re thinking…. What does that really mean? Well, for starters, I will stop over thinking things and just start doing. Plus, the next time one of my girls ask me to stop, drop and color my answer will be YES, pass the crayons!
Each of my girls are different: Lady A likes to sew and is crazy into fashion and Missy S is my tinkerer. She seems to lose her self in the act of creating. It can really be with anything, not just fabric. Like me, she seems to be smitten with the game Mouse Trap and really enjoys mystery mail.
I think that’s why she loves to open up her monthly box from Kiwi Crate. (Each month the box is filled with something completely new and unexpected. Such a treat!) Not only does she enjoy the process but she is always excited to show off her creations. Watching her makes me want to join the fun.
To keep her inspired, we are trying something new this month.. LittleBits.
I wasn’t sure what to expect when the box arrived, but from the minute we lifted the lid, it was pretty cool! Each littleBits part helps transmit a motion, sound or command to another part.
Things that caught my attention right away:
- no heavy instructions
- color coding
- magnetic snap feature
- no tricky wiring
- one 9 volt battery
At first I was super worried that I would need to spend hours reading instructions and explaining things to my daughter but man, did she jump right in. The color coded system made the entire afternoon fantastic. So, after a quick scan of the instructions we dove in.
I let her take the lead and watched as she created a working fan and joked about making a cookie jar alarm or even bringing it to school for her locker. Clearly, you can tell where her priorities are.
It was pretty clear that she wanted to do more so, we hopped on the computer and hit up the littleBits site to see what others her age were making. It’s super impressive to see the power of unleashed creativity in a child. There are almost 2000 projects here to inspire you and the possibilities are pretty endless here.
We chatted about all different ways to use these littleBits and each came up with a project list. As you can imagine, they were very different. I related everything to fabric, toys and my office while she was all fun and games.
Here are a few from my list:
- quiet books (great gift idea)
- stuffed dolls (add a sound, light or movement when you squeeze them)
- door bell for my office
- a closet light
It was really fun to watch her take ordinary bits from around the house and turn them into moving parts. I look forward to seeing what other things she brings to life with her littleBits kit.
