Pintucks –

noun

  1. A pattern of ridges in fabric formed by a series of tucks placed at regular intervals in the fabric. Can be made by hand, or by machine.

A fabric with a pintuck surface has a series of folds or tucks in it. You can sew these tucks in place by hand, or use your sewing machine. You might find this technique in particular on the front of a blouse, or often on the cuff of a sleeve or at the waist of a skirt.

Let’s take a look at the pintuck presser foot in action-

Tips to make pintucks:

  1. Draw a line with a washable marker, or pull a thread to determine pintuck placement.
  2. Attach pintuck presser foot to machine and insert double needle.
  3. Line the center of the presser foot over the line and sew the first pintuck in place.
  4. Shift the pintuck to the left under an off center groove and sew the length of the first pintuck. The first tuck will act as a guide, keeping your fabric straight and evenly spaced.
  5.  Repeat the process until you have stitched the desired amount of pintucks.
