Valentine’s Day is this weekend and I’m here to tell you that there is still plenty of time to make a little handmade gift for your special someone! My Sew Sweet mini quilt is an easy to make, quick stitch project. Perfect for an afternoon of sewing.
This mini quilt is a quick stitch project that includes 2 small quilt blocks to create a focal feature. Here are the supplies you will need to get started.
SUPPLIES:
- assorted fabrics*
- quilt batting
- sewing thread
- sewing machine
- rotary mat, ruler, and cutter
- basic sewing supplies
Fabrics can make a big impact on small projects like this so, to get started, I selected a few fat quarters from my Michelle Miller stash. They include Lipstick & Turquoise from the Coco collection, white from the Cotton Couture lineup, and Navy Tumble Towers, available in wide back.
After designing a quick block in EQ8, I went straight to work cutting out my fabrics and piecing them together on my Baby Lock Altair.
Even though the pieces are small, they went together quickly. Here is a quick video of my assembly.
Now, for anyone out there who just read the words, small piecing, and got nervous, don’t fret, you got this. It just takes a little prep work and patience. Here are a few of my favorite tips for sewing small.
- spray fabrics with starch before cutting
- take your time cutting, making sure that your pieces are square
- triple-check your seam allowance
- press as you go
With my quilt block complete, it was time to put my sandwich together and quilt my mini. Normally I would have just stitched a simple design directly but the Baby Lock Altair has some amazing features that I wanted to explore.
So, I selected to hoop my layers together and use the IQ Designer feature to create my quilt area. Then I selected this simple decorative stitch to fill the area.
After a quick stitch out, my quilting was complete and I was in love. Time to trim my mini quilt to size and add the binding.
This project was so much fun to make, perfect for using leftover scraps and makes a wonderful gift!
