This week I sliced into another sweet strips to make block 2 in the Sweet on You mystery quilt along and I love the way they turned out. Now, it’s time to take a look at what the Twisted Tulip row looks like and get stitching.
It’s so much fun to see your blocks stitched up in the mystery quilt along! The variety of prints and color make this so much fun and I am really looking forward to seeing these quilt tops all stitched up.
Twisted Tulip Row Layout
Before I get to the giveaway details, let’s chat about the row layout. Sweet On You is a horizontal strip layout, made from 9 rows, 6 blocks, sashing and boarders. This quilt is all about the scraps! I highly encourage you to just have fun and play with fabrics from your stash. The Twisted Tulip row has an additional block in the center. That means, you will only be able to semi complete the row today. Let’s take a look.
You can see in the updated quilt image that the twisted tulip row placement will be in the center. The additional mystery block will be revealed later in our adventure.
Arrange cut pieces, right sides together, as per diagram. Press seam allowance in one direction. Complete two rows.

Done. I made all the pineapple smoothies in rainbow colors, so each additional row will try to work in the colors used on the smoothies. So far so good.

When I am forced to rip out a seam (ha, ha, ha) all those threads are still on the seam line. I wrap backwards (with the sticky side out) masking tape around my hand. Then rock my hand over the seam and the threads come right off.

Have started using a
rotary cutter and find
it so easy to use. Need

Always make sure you are using a 1/4″ seam allowance

Keep a roll of blue painters tape handy. It can provide a straight line when needed, you can write on it and mark your blocks, ie R1-B1. Always put in right corner. It doesn’t leave residue. Cut several thicknesses and you have a straight line for your machine. Endless uses.

I use one of those metal bias tape makers to make and press binding for a quilt. No more burned fingers! Thanks!

My biggest challenge was always finding things. I know I just saw it. I know it is somewhere here. Sound familiar? Once I learned to clean up after every sewing time, things were better. Now if I find mys elf getting frustrated, I try to stop and put things away. It makes all the difference,

always take your time, there is no need to sew fast at all. slow & steady and pin/clip as much as you want!! sewing isn’t a race. with practice you will find your own speed to use and feel comfortable with!

What is my favorite sewing tip? Wow, that’s a hard one to answer. I’ve learned so many tips in the past year, since I started quilting. I guess one of my favorites would be to make sure you cut accurately when quilting

I use golf tees to hold my partially full bobbins with the coordination thread.
Angela Bowling says
when I am appliqueing light solid fabrics over a printed fabric, I fuse the light solid to another fabric of the same light solid or white and use the fused fabrics as if they were a single layer. This keeps the print fabric from showing through the light fabric. There is not much worse than being able to see the lower fabric through the top fabric.

I have a feeling it was the right choice to make my tulips with some of the same fabrics as pineapple. Can’t wait to see.

I use long handled tweezers when threading the needle on my machine. Even though I have an automatic threader, the tweezers help me to get the threads through all of the notches and places it needs to go. My old fingers can’t do it so good anymore.

Whenever I have many strips to sew together, I match them up ahead of time then “chain” stitch them, leaving about 1/2 inch between the sewn strips.
