Binding –
noun
- a narrow strip of cloth attached along the edge of something
Binding is most commonly found in quilts, to encase the raw edges of the quilt sandwich and keep the fabric from fraying. However, this type of trim can be used in any sewing project where there are raw, exposed fabric edges (to enclose those edges and keep them from showing or fraying). Binding can be cut on the straight grain or on bias. This will depend on the shape you would like to bind.
Basic Stats-
- Size: Can be any size.
- Bias: Bias binding will allow for a smooth, ripple free outlook along a curved edge.
- Grainline: Straight grain binding is most commonly used for straight edges.
- Make your own: Creating your own will not only elevate your project but enhance that customized feel. You can purchase tools to help you create this trim with accuracy and speed at your local quilt shop or here on line.
- Where to use: Along the outside edge of your project. Most commonly used on quilts, wall hangings and hemmed edges.
- Where to buy: If you don’t have time to make your own, you can pick up pre packaged trims in different colors at your local quilt shop or here on line.
